The firm was founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1890.

- 2009 - Formalizes a longstanding relationship with independent firm El-Khoury & Partners in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
- 2011 - Combines with leading UK law firm Hammonds LLP, adding its nearly 500 lawyers across new offices in Berlin, Birmingham, Leeds, Madrid, Manchester and Paris, and significantly expanding its presence in Brussels and London. Combines with the Perth office of Australian firm Minter Ellison.[1]
